This medal was issued to commemorate Japanese participation in World War I. The Imperial Edict #203 of November 6, 1915, established this medal for those who participated in the 1917-1918 actions of World War I where the Japanese were present. Struck in blackened bronze, this medal measures 30mm in diameter. The obverse displays crossed Army and Navy flags with a chrysanthemum crest above and paulownia below. The reverse has seven characters translating “Taisho 3rd-4th Year War”. The bar above the medal contains characters which translate “War Medal”. Complete with a blue and white silk ribbon.
